End of Year Message from the President

Dear Members, Happy New Year

I would like to take this opportunity to review some of the Club’s activities for 2021.

Our membership has grown from 281 at the beginning of the year to 377.
Bill and his staff, Gregg, Logan, Peter, Taylor, and all the grounds staff are a big reason for our membership growth.

The Tennis Program has grown, and the Spanish Wells Dream Team are the overall winners of Team Tennis on the Island, Congratulations. The addition to the tennis staff of Hannah has greatly increased interest in the Club and the number of lessons for Adults and children.

You can see Bill or Logan on the practice tees giving lessons at any given time. The Ladies Day and Men’s groups are very well attended.

Maintenance of the Tennis Courts and the Golf course is ongoing; both are in good shape. There is a section on the 8th green that Gregg is working on. It is not diseased; instead, it is water damage. Don’t forget to sand those divots!

The Holbrook Room continues to serve excellent lunches and wonderful meals at all our Social events, all of which are well attended. So get ready for more in 2022.

We are still working on some of our 2021 projects. The Ladies Room in the Clubhouse was completed, and the Men’s room needs a few finishing touches. Work is in progress on the Course bathroom. We will move on to the Pool Bathroom in 2022. The pumphouse on the 5th and 6th hole is completed, still to be completed is the pump house on 4.

The SWC and the SW POA have a signed Drainage Agreement with the Town of Hilton Head.

In 2022 we are hoping for the construction and the completion of the deck. High Top tables and chairs for the end of the dock and the tennis courts have been ordered. In addition, new golf carts and a new tractor will be arriving. Members of the Board, with Gregg’s help, are exploring additional parking options.

On a financial note, all is positive. The complete financial picture will be presented at Annual Meeting. Notification of the Annual Meeting will be issued once the date is determined.

Thanks again to the staff for their hard work and to the Board for their support, but mostly to you, the members who make the Spanish Wells Club such a great place.

Sharpening Event

Sharper Edges - Knife Sharpening Event

The Holiday cooking season is upon us, so we are offering y'all an opportunity to have happy, sharper edges in your kitchens for holiday food prep...

EVENT DATE:
Monday, November 22nd
8:00 am to 11:00 am drop off
After 11:00 am, Tom will be concentrating on sharpening in order to give you Sharper Edges.
Tom will text or call you when your items are complete and you will return to pick them up later the same day.
Please bring items wrapped in a towel or market bag so Tom can easily keep things organized.

An RSVP is required to bring your items, and the RSVP is limited to 25 residents. There is a maximum of 5 items per RSVP, with a minimum of 3 items, scissors can be added to the 5 items.

Items sharpened:

Knives, scissors/shears (both household/fabric/industrial and stylist/groomers), and garden implements (clippers, loppers, etc.). Tom will take scissors with him to sharpen and Tom will deliver/return them the next day.

Pricing:

Pricing is variable as Tom will need to view the items. However, here is a general idea:

Kitchen knives average about $15 each, though it varies with length, condition of edge, broken points, etc.

Garden clippers and loppers range from $5-$20+, again dependent upon the condition of edge, length, etc.

Household scissors approx. $10+, stylist/grooming shears $35+.

Bring your items and Tom will assess them.

Cash, Checks, and Credit Cards are accepted - Cash is king. 😀

Dull edges are dangerous, - you have to work too hard to cut, and may slip - ouch! So, we want you to have happy, sharper edges.

Tom's background information:

Tom has been hand sharpening his own, and family/friend's, knives since he was 13 years old. He was, and is, really quite good at it, now he has advanced to a nifty belt sharpening system, and he is at a whole new level! He has been doing Sharpening Events and Farmers Markets on Hilton Head Island, Bluffton, and Port Royal since last summer and getting great results, and many repeat customers.

Monthly Message from the Board.

Monthly Message to Spanish Wells Club Members from the President:

The Board met on September 20th.

I am happy to report that our membership numbers are good and remaining steady.

A special thanks to the Tennis Committee, tennis members, and our staff for a
great event on the 17th, sponsoring the first round of the Pro League.
In the works—resurfacing of the Tennis Courts scheduled to begin mid-October.

The construction of “The Deck” is on track to start the first week of October. Pump
and Drainage issues on the course are still a work in progress, almost done.

An effort to upgrade the men’s room in the Clubhouse is underway.

More great plans are in the works.

Kathy Joyce,
President Spanish Wells Club
